State-Wise Broadband Subscribers in India

In India, the number of people using the Internet has been increasing these days. Broadband services in the country have promoted people to gain the access of Internet. Though Internet penetration is higher in urban areas, it is now slowly growing in rural areas of the country. The government, under Bharat Nirman, to cover all the 2,50,000 village panchayats with broadband by 2012. About 96,548 village panchayats have been covered with broadband as of January 2011. Also, rural areas have been provided with 7,70,000 connections by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as on 31st January 2011.

According to the Press Information Bureau of Government of India, Maharashtra is in leading position with over 18 lakhs broadband subscribers followed by Tamil Nadu (13.3 lakhs), Karnataka (11.3 lakhs), Andhra Pradesh (0.99 lakhs), Delhi (0.97 lakhs), Kerala (0.69 lakhs), Gujarat (0.65 lakhs), Uttar Pradesh (0.56 lakhs), Punjab (0.52 lakhs), West Bengal (0.49 lakhs), Madhya Pradesh (0.41 lakhs), Rajasthan (0.33 lakhs), Haryana (0.23 lakhs), Orissa (0.17 lakhs), Bihar including Jharkhand (0.14 lakhs), Assam (0.67 lakhs), Himachal Pradesh (0.57 lakhs), and Jammu & Kashmir (0.46 lakhs).

About 0.37 lakhs of broadband subscribers are seen in North East including Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura. Where as in Andaman & Nicobar there are only 5,000 subscribers. It is found that, Kerala, though the smallest state, has about 7 lakhs of subscribers and is found to have the maximum broadband density among all states.

However, these days, with growth of mobile telephony, there has been an increase in growth of Internet mobile users. Due to the cheap handsets and cheaper call rates, mobile telephony spread across all over India.
