Contribution of the Indian Education Sector to Online Advertising in India

Online advertising is a form of promotion on Internet for communicating the message to attract the customers. Education sector is one of the major sectors spending on online advertising in India. Online advertising is classified into two types, the display (images or logos or text based images) and text ads. Upon clicking the display image or the text, one can go to the site of the advertiser.

Advertisers of the education sector include various educational institutes, coaching classes, colleges, schools, universities and many others. A report on online advertising by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) states that the education sector contributed for 6% of the total online display market size in India. It is estimated to contribute 7% in the fiscal year 2011. There had been an increase in the online display advertisements spend of the education sector since fiscal year 2008. The sector spent Rs. 10 crores, Rs. 20 crores, and Rs. 25 crores on online display ads during the fiscal years 2008, 2009, and 2010 respectively. It is estimated to spend about Rs. 35 crores in this fiscal year.

The report also states that the sector contributed for 4% of the total online text advertisement market in India in 2010. The estimation of contribution for the fiscal year 2011 is also found to be the same. About Rs. 16 crores is spent by the education sector in 2010. However, it is estimated to spend Rs. 18 crores in 2011.

The education sector spent a total of Rs. 41 crores on online advertising in 2010 and is estimated to spend Rs. 53 crores in the fiscal year 2011.
